About the tour:

Journey with our friends Geek Nation Tour to the frozen city of Felstad, or as it is more commonly known, FROSTGRAVE. Well, the city that inspired the game anyway – Tallinn, Estonia. Geek Nation Tours takes you to the first in a series of exotic gaming destinations, where they discover rarely visited locales and explore their culture, history and culinary delights, coupled each day with fully-immersive, elite gaming experiences. What better place to start their new enterprise than in the Baltic state of Estonia right in the middle of winter?

Joseph A. McCullough designer and high mage himself, will join them on the adventure and provide new custom-designed scenarios matched to the daily themes of the explorations of the area. GNT tour participants will dive right into the Medieval backdrop and have Living History Guides show all that Tallinn has to offer. From exceptional dinning and period pubs to, eerie forests, feral bogs, and Viking villages… You will be delving deep into the Frozen City…

But don't worry, we will let you communicate with home via modern day wizardry… Estonia has declared internet access a human right and Skype was born there… and yes, wireless internet is almost everywhere.

Act fast though… This tour can only accommodate 15 participants and thus you will need to grab a spot soon!

So, cast some spells and if you think you have the guts to explore the ruins – hop aboard!

For Frostgrave, they don't like to do Kickstarter campaigns. Instead, they run Nickstarters. They're pre-order systems that unlock special freebies as they go along. They've got their latest one underway now, looking to get some figures for The Maze of Malcor. If you want in, you've got 25 days to get your name on the list.

From the announcement:

Today sees the launch of the huge Frostgrave Miniature Pre-Order program, based around the book The Maze of Malcor. The set includes the 5 new wizards and apprentices, over a dozen new monsters, new specialist soldiers, and the new all-female, multi-pose, plastic box set Frostgrave Soldiers II! Also, as order levels reach certain 'spend-goals' everyone participating will earn free figures and other potential rewards. But this is no crowd-funding campaign. All of these figures are either already produced, or in the last stages of production, so orders should be shipped soon after the campaign ends!

Antenociti's Workshop Running US-IMF : 28mm & 15mm Sci-fi Armour Kickstarter

Welcome to the US-IMF (United States Independent Military Forces) which is one of the factions in our Governance of Technology range of sci-fi scenery and vehicles.

This Kickstarter is to help us rapidly expand our successful "Governance of Technology" range of 15mm and 28mm sci-fi vehicles by completing an entire faction worth of vehicles in one go.

We've chosen the US-IMF faction for this project as it represents a high-tech faction that is entirely militaristic within our 'verse and we felt that the "gamey" style of the models was not at all well represented on the tabletop at large scales.

We all love to fill our lives with all things gaming. If you're a fan of the Frostgrave setting and wish there was more for it that you can interact with, your wish has been granted. Next week, the new Spellcaster: The Frostgrave Magazine will launch its inaugural issue.

From the announcement:

Next Friday, June 30, will see the release of the first issue of Spellcaster: The Frostgrave Magazine.

This is a PDF-only magazine, mostly written and assembled by Frostgrave author Joseph A. McCullough. It's a chance to present rules and other game material that either doesn't fit the game world or just don't mesh well with any of the major releases.

So what is in the inaugural issue?

* Rules for using black powder firearms
* Rules for horses in the Frozen City
* Rules for Knightly Orders which add variety to your knights and templars
* Alone in the Crypt – a solo Frostgrave scenario in which you play a captain with a quiver-full of magic arrows trying to escape a crypt full of undead
* The Catacombs of the Evrenbright – a three scenario mini-campaign originally created for Adepticon 2017

This issue of Spellcaster will consist of 18 pages, have a cover price of $5, and will initially be available through RPG Now and Wargames Vault, with Amazon hopefully following soon as well.

HT Publishers will also be producing a Spanish edition of the magazine which will be available on the same day.

Realm Master Kickstarter Review

Realm Master is a game that's going to feel familiar to many gamers; because there's a lot here you've probably seen before. In Realm Master you'll roll dice Yahtzee style to collect gold, heal wounds, collect banners and attack the other players. The aim of the game is to either be the last man/woman standing, or to collect 10 banners. Banners can be collected by rolling the dice but the most efficient way is to become the Realm Master; by rolling at least one sword you can pay the entry fee and enter one of the four realms. Once in the realm you can collect resources and generally swank about like you own the place. However, you'll raise the ire of every other player, and from this point all attacks from all other players are targeted at you. Of course you can bail out whenever you want but you won't be able to collect those juicy coins, hearts and banners.

Anansi and the Book of Box of Stories Review

If you're unfamiliar with trick taking games may I suggest reading a short primer on the subject? Now that you're an expert, we can dive a little deeper in what makes Anansi it's own game.

Anansi is played over a series of five rounds, after which players add up their points and whoever has the most is the winner. To begin each round, players are dealt a hand of cards and a number of role cards are placed on the table for players to select in order. These role cards have a number and an ability on them. The number is the amount of points you will score this round for every trick you manage to win and the ability will give you a unique power available for you to use.

3 to 4 Headed Monster Review

3 to 4 Headed Monster is a social deduction game for three to four players. Players represent one head of an indecisive monster–one head is a pacifist and the rest want to rampage. The pacifist wins if he or she can control the monster enough times to direct it toward peace or go undetected. The rampaging heads win if they rampage each round or if they discover the pacifist.

Histrio Review

Histrio is a simultaneous action selection card game that has players managing troupes of actors as they travel throughout the kingdom in an effort to impress the king by putting on shows that match his mood. Those who do will earn the most money (ecus, in game terms) and win the game.

Histrio is played over two theatrical seasons. Each season consists of a series of turns which continue until the deck of encounter cards is empty. When the encounter deck is empty, a second season is set up and played just like the first.

Board Game Quest:

Draconis Invasion Review

Hordes of invaders have appeared on the eastern borders of the kingdom and the King has charged the players with recruiting troops to repel them. In game play terms, players will be using their starting deck of gold and defender cards to try and build up an army of increasingly powerful cards. Players will be purchasing action cards, new defenders, and more lucrative forms of income. Eventually players will be fighting the invaders, earning them valuable glory points in the process. Once the invasion has been repelled, the player with the most glory will be crowned the King's champion.

Green Deal Review

Globally and energy conscious corporations (stop laughing) are vying to impress the public and gain recognition for their efforts to be "the best employer, the most innovative, social or ecological company." Players will do this by starting projects around the globe, but they must bid for turn order to do so. The various projects and their placements, as well as the PR impressions, gain victory points on various scales. The corporation with the most victory points from these activities wins.

Difference Review

In Difference, you are trying to get through the stack of cards that are given to you at the start of the game. In order to do this, you must spot the two differences between your card and the one on the table. If you are the first to do so, your card then becomes the reference card for the next round. This will continue until one player is out of cards and the game is over.

Terra Mystica iOS Review

Terra Mystica is a territory building and economic game for 2-5 players. The main goal of the game is to expand out your unique civilization by changing the land into your race's preferred terrain type. This is accomplished through a careful management of the games resources, and by building and upgrading structures. To be honest, there is a lot going on in Terra Mystica, so if you want to know more about the game before we dive into the digital app, check out our full Terra Mystica review here.

Meeples & Miniatures:

Scum of the Earth Review

The game, somewhat intentionally, has no hard and fast scale – the authors ask the players to have the mindset of a TV director attempting to film an epic battle on a very limited budget: Bring the camera in close and hope that goes some way to make 30 men look like 300 or more. (You have seen Sharpe's Waterloo, haven't you? It's a bit like that).

You can play the game on a 2? x 2? or 3? x 3? table. You can play the game with as little as 20 or 30 figures a side – Infantry units are made up of 6 models, whilst cavalry units have 3 models. Artillery are made up of a gun and 2 crew.

The Campaign for Kharkov: October 1941 Review

This 48 page book, available as a PDF or an e-book, is a campaign supplement written by Chris Stoesen for the Chain of Command World War II Platoon level rules from Too Fat Lardies. It is worth noting that this supplement is not a complete game in itself, and you will need both a copy of the main Chain of Command Rules and the At The Sharp End campaign rules in order to play, along with a copy of the Big Chain of Command rules.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows Of The Past Board Game Review

theMCGuiRE review takes a look at the newish TMNT board game from IDW Games /Pandasaurus and Kevin Wilson! We did the unboxing of the WORKS edition and now here is the game play of Battle 1 - the entire thing! You know this was only going to be a few turns but I got so into the battle and I could not stop and we went the entire scenario all the way to win condition. So who won? the Villain or the mighty green machine?? You will never know unless you watch and find out.

The game plays just as good as it looks and maybe even better. I absolutely love the battle mechanics and flow of the game. Its simple but offers tons of decisions to be made each game turn. This game is designed to be played as one player taking on the Villain and one player(s) being the turtles but I had a blast playing both sides against myself - that's how fun this game is!

April O'Neil Hero Pack Review

theMCGuiRE review takes a look at the BRAND NEW April O'Neil Hero Pack Expansion, which will be released officially very soon. What I wanted to lay out in this review are the differences between the O'Neil pack you receive in the "Works" edition from the kickstarter and what you receive in this new hero pack because there are some definite differences!

iSlaytheDragon:

Dice City Review

Dice City is a dice drafting/dice placement game in which you first roll your dice and place them on city spaces dictated by the roll, then activate those spaces for your benefit. The goal of the game is to be the player with the most victory points at the end.

Each player has their own personal board (their city) where they place their dice and any cards purchased from the central market. A player's turn consists of four steps.

Picassimo Review

Picassimo is a drawing party/puzzle game for three to six players. Players are artists trying to recreate the stolen works of the great Paco Picassimo. The player with the most points wins.

Each player receives a player screen with a language card tucked in the pocket, a drawing board, and a dry erase marker. The seven transformation cards are shuffled and set aside. Players decide which difficulty to play on, and each player takes a clue card. Players choose one of the two clues at the difficulty agreed level and draw a picture behind their screens.

They Who Were 8 Review

In They Who Were 8 players are bards recounting epic tales of the gods. Players resolve action cards to bring glory (positive points) and infamy (negative points) to the various gods in play, represented by tiles.

In the individually competitive Titanomachy variant each player serves two immortals in particular, one paired with another from each of their neighbors. Your goal is to bring lots of glory to a pair of deities containing one of your patrons, but not too much glory to yours specifically. The winner is the player whose god has the least points among the pair with the highest total value. Perhaps this shows they're magnanimity? Or possibly their chicanery.

Board Game Quest:

Cosmic Run: Rapid Fire Preview

Cosmic Run: Rapid Fire is a two player dice drafting game with players competing to pilot their three spaceships to sanctuary planets past a minefield. Even if players don't reach the planets, achieving certain goals earns points and the player with the most points (or hasn't lost by other means) wins the game.

Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age Review

RTtA is a dice rolling game for one to four players who are competing to build the best civilization in the history of humanity. It is a more complicated gamers version of Yahtzee, rerolls and all.

The game base game takes 30 – 40 minutes, but increases to 45 minutes to an hour with the expansion. The extra time that the expansion adds is more than worth it as I will explain later.

Dragoon Review

In Dragoon, each player takes on the role of a dragon, trying to collect the most gold from the surrounding countryside. During the game, players will be moving around the landscape, claiming or destroying villages, stealing gold, and battling other dragons. Turns will go by quickly, and if lady luck is on your side, riches will flow into your coffers. Be the first dragon to acquire 50 gold and you win!

Star Wars Dobble

dobble-star-wars-spot-it-review

Star Wars has some pretty iconic imagery. X-Wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and men in their pyjamas waving glowing swords are all distinctive images that when you see you immediately know you are in a Galaxy far far away.

But do you know your X-Wing from your Y-Wing? Can you spot the difference between Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker? And, more importantly, can you do this before anyone else?

Dobble (also known as Spot it!) is a really simple game of matching pairs. Each card is a circular disc about the size of a beer mat covered with different imagery. Between any two cards there is one, and only one, item that appears on both cards and your goal is to spot those matching items as quickly as possible.

Lord of the Rings The Card Game

lotrlcg-banner

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game was originally released by Fantasy Flight Games in 2011, and upon release very quickly became one of my favourite games.

I and my son Josh are big Lord of the Rings fans, and so we played this game a lot over the next couple of years. Then with one thing and another, we didn't play for a while, and then the game got packed away, and hasn't seen the light of day, as it turns out for several years. (Lets be honest here. I have a lot of expansions for this game already. It's a big, heavy box and takes up a lot of room.)

iSlaytheDragon:

Captain Sonar Review

captainsonar_boxcover-768x512

Captain Sonar is a team versus team game of submarine warfare. Each player fills the role of a crewmember aboard a sub, and the goal is to find and destroy your opponent.

The game can be played turn by turn or in real time, but we'll focus on the real time version here. That's really the intended style of gameplay, anyway.

Each submarine has four roles: Captain, First Mate, Engineer, and Radio Operator.

Planet Rush Review

planet-rush

Planet Rush is a semicooperative negotiation and area-majority game for three to five players. Players are corporations seeking to colonize Zenobia. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Fight for Olympus Review

fight-for-olympus

Fight for Olympus is a two player, card-driven battle where players are managing hands of cards representing heroes and soldiers. You're adding equipment to better your forces, resolving attacks, and deploying special abilities, all in an effort to win a spot on Mount Olympus.

The rules are simple. To begin the game, twenty random cards are removed from the deck and players are dealt hands of six cards from those that remain. The rest form a draw pile. Players take turns playing cards to the central board and then attacking their opponents' units. (The board is divided into three areas: Olympus, Delphi, and Troy and there are spaces in each area where cards must be played. The areas of the board become more important during the attack phase of a turn, when area bonuses may be available.)

In Rollet, 2-4 players are trying to score points by knocking a wooden ball into their opponent's goal. Players accomplish this by dropping a metal ball down a chute. If their aim is true, they'll score a point when they knock the wooden ball into the goal. Score 5 points and your team wins!

Lairs

There is a distant peak. One whose soaring vistas, winding caverns, and sheer faces shame lesser crags. It is the culmination of what such a landscape should be, and as such claims only one name, the Mountain.

It is said that those who know the way can find the Mountain at the summit of every climb, over the crest of any foothill, in the depths of all caves. You are one such traveler, and you have led your people to the Mountain, for it is here that you shall make your lair.

Frostgrave: Into the Breeding Pit Nickstarter Deals from Sally 4th

As well as offering all of the discounts, stretch goals and freebies from the official Gnickstarter campaign, Sally 4th have put together some extra free products that are available exclusively from us.

Over the last couple of years Clear Plastic bases have really taken off, and we find ourselves dispatching many hundreds every week. Frostgrave is a game environment that really benefits from them as from turn to turn your figures could be standing on snow, stone flagstones, wooden floorboards or rocky outcrops. We are therefore giving away a bag of 30, 25mm clear round bases with every level Breeding Pit pre-order at level 3 (Pit Warrior) and above.

'Into the Breeding Pits', sees our warbands delve down to the subterranean level under the ruins of Frostgrave. Many gamers collected free Terra-Block dungeon sets as part of our 'Liche Lord' Nickstarter promotion, so to expand on this we have designed two exclusive rooms that are completely compatible with all of the existing Terra-Block Range. The 'Pit Slave Cells' features three cells within a larger room, each with hinged, working cell doors and is being included for free with all pre-orders at level 4 (Pit Chief) and above. Those who pre-order at level 6 (Pit Master) will also receive from us the 'Dungeon Entrance Chamber featuring a double width staircase within a 100mm x 200mm room with multiple exits.

These offers run from now until 4th July.

Brigade Games and NorthStar are bringing you their 8th Gnickstarter campaign (or is it "Nickstarter"? I dunno, the page uses both. So take or leave the "G" as you please). This time around it's a new Frostgrave expansion: Into the Breeding Pits. What's a (G)Nickstarter? It's the special pre-order program that the companies have.

So, what can you expect in this campaign? Well, Into the Breeding Pits takes Frostgrave players into the catacombs, sewers, and dungeons underneath the Frozen City (might want to bring a torch... and maybe a clothespin for your nose). There, the Beastcrafters experiment on any sort of creature they can get their hands on. They're not very careful with what happens to their experiments when they're made, though, just letting them loose into the tunnels. But it's not all gloom and doom down there... There's also treasure!

The campaign is up and running now and is set to go until the 3rd of July.

Frostgrave is getting some new releases for it. Brigade Games and Sally 4th are teaming up to get you some great deals as part of their Nickstarter program. Yes, Nickstarter and not Kickstarter. Because, while they're not over on Kickstarter looking for funding and such, they do have stretch goals based on pre-orders made for the game. The more pre-orders, the more gets unlocked. Hence, Nickstarter.

Also like a Kickstarter, there are different "funding levels" that you can join in on. Basically, they're different pre-order sets that you can get. Pick out the one you want, send in your order, and your total will be added to the Nickstarter total. See? Just like a Kickstarter campaign but for pre-orders. You can get a look at some of the different levels above. The campaign runs until November 2nd.

Osprey Publishing and Northstar Military Figures are teaming up to take you to the frozen land of Nador... I mean Frostgrave, with a new fantasy skirmish wargame. In Frostgrave, players are playing as wizards who form up bands of followers who then roam the streets, looking for various lost, and powerful, magic items. Each wizard comes from one of the various wizard schools and can learn up to 80 different spells.

Frostgrave minis

The game is meant to be quick to play, which each one lasting just an hour or so. However, there's a heavy element of campaign play thrown in. That's where the true depth of Frostgrave shows through. There's treasure tables, establishing bases, and even wandering monsters that could turn your street fight on its ear. Plus, there's loads of different scenarios to try out.

Northstar is running a "Nickstarter," which is sort of like a pre-order with unlockables. As people order, the overall total goes up. As the total goes up, more new things become available. (Mad Robot sometimes does stuff like that as well).
You have until June 29th to get in on the action, and things should start shipping out in July.
